New Hampton votes to protect the Snake River (March 13, 2018)

By a ballot vote of 226 to 40, New Hampton residents voted to designate the Snake River Wetlands Complex as “Prime Wetlands” in the Town of New Hampton as recommended by the Planning Board. These wetlands protect and purify drinking water, buffer against floods and harbor a diverse community of plants and animals The 50+ acre wetland complex straddles the town line between the towns of New Hampton and Center Harbor This action follows a similar, successful vote by the Town of Center in 2012. Designated Prime Wetlands are afforded the highest level of regulatory review by the NH Department of Environmental Services.   Lake Waukewan, located immediately downstream of the Snake River Wetland Complex, is the water supply for the Town of Meredith.
