Residential Storm Water Management Workshop to be Held on June 18th

Presented by the Waukewan Watershed Advisory Committee

Meredith, N.H.  Think about it. What would your life be like if your lake became so polluted that you weren’t comfortable wading, swimming or fishing in the lake? What if your lake became so polluted that the value of your investment declines?  What if public health advisories and warnings continue to increase? What does this mean to your quality of life? What does this mean to an economy largely based on tourism and water-based recreation?

Stormwater runoff pollution IS considered to be the greatest threat to lake water quality and should be a concern of all residents and property owners. Accordingly, the Waukewan Watershed Advisory Committee is pleased to announce an upcoming community workshop entitled: “Improving Water Quality through Residential Stormwater Management”.  Workshop attendees will receive practical information on how to better manage stormwater on their property, in other words, being part of the solution to help protect the future of your lake.

The “drop-in style” workshop will be held on Tuesday, June 18th from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Meredith Community Center, 1 Circle Drive. There are three scheduled presentations that anyone can attend:  Beginning at 4:30 PM, Rick Van de Poll, Ph.D. will present: “The Importance of the Shoreland Buffer”.  At 5:30 PM, Lisa Loosigian, Program Coordinator for the NHDES Soak-Up-The-Rain Program will present “Do-it-Yourself Stormwater Solutions for Your Home”.  At 6:30 PM, Julia Peterson, Water Resources Specialist with UNH Cooperative Extension will present “Landscaping and Lawn Care for Water Quality Protection”.  Each presentation will allow for plenty of time for questions and answers.

In addition to the scheduled presentations, representatives of state and local environmental organizations will be available to answer your questions, share ideas and identify potential next steps. Participating organizations include UNH Cooperative Extension, NH Department of Environmental Services, Belknap County Conservation District, Lake Winnipesaukee Association, NH Lakes Association, Windy Waters Conservancy, Meredith Conservation Commission, and the Waukewan Watershed Advisory Committee.

Donna Van Ness Murphy, Chair of the Waukewan Watershed Advisory Committee noted, “We have set this up with flexibility in mind.  We’ve assembled lots of resources for folks to take advantage of. Our aim is to encourage property owners to look at their property from a stewardship perspective and to implement voluntary, small scale improvements that collectively will make a difference.” This workshop is free and all are welcome regardless of what community or lake you identify with. Light refreshments will be available. For more information contact Donna Van Ness Murphy at dvnom@aol.com.
